Benefits of Activities
Activities are a great way of keeping your loved one engaged. Whether they are physical, mental or social activities. They will create positive experiences that get rid of stress and unwanted behaviours that are very common for people with Alzheimer's or Dementia.
The activities can be anything that your loved one may want to do. Perhaps a hobby from the past that they would like to start up again. A game like chess may help as it can provide a great distraction and a way of using the brain that isn't too stressful. Also knitting is a good activity as it can take you away from the stresses of life and allow you to concentrate on another task.
Activities can also build self-esteem, help with daily living and enhance physical strength.
Getting out into the community can be a big help for someone suffering with dementia as well. You could take them to a day centre where they can meet new people, have a cup of tea, a chat and also get involved in activities. Perhaps a walk in a park is more up their street, if they struggle with walking, you could consider hiring a wheelchair or finding a park with plenty of seating areas so they can rest.
Staying active is a very important thing to do when you are getting older. It can really help you out in your daily life. It can keep you fit and also keep your brain fit. Sit down with your loved one and ask them if they would like to do anything and try and help them find a hobby they can do.
