Creating a safe environment for people with Dementia
One of the many conditions that Alzheimer's brings on in people is that it impairs their judgement and problem solving skills. This can drastically increase a person's risk of injury. It is important to promote safety and create a safe environment for them to be in. below are a few ways that you can create this safe and secure environment.
To prevent falls you can avoid using scatter rugs, extension cords and try and remove any clutter that could cause your loved one to trip or fall. You can also install handrails or grab bars in critical areas. You can also install locks on to cabinets that contain anything potentially dangerous, alcohol, medicine and cleaning substances for example.
Lowering the thermostat on the hot water heater can prevent your loved one being burnt when they are washing up or taking a bath. A grab rail in the bathroom is also a good idea so they can get in and out of the bathtub a lot easier.
You can also take fire precautions by keeping matches and lighters out of reach. If your loved one smokes then make sure that they only do so with supervision. Make sure that a fire extinguisher is accessible and the smoke alarms have fresh batteries, just in case.
These are just a few ways of making an environment safe for your loved one. These are a good starting point. It is worth observing your loved one and see where they are struggling and from there, find a way to help them.
