Help improve the memory of people with dementia

People with dementia often experience problems with their memories and also have trouble thinking. They are likely to use past experiences to understand what is happening in the present because they find it difficult to store new information efficiently.

By learning more about your loved ones life journey, their stories, likes and dislikes it can be a great way of helping them through their day to day life.

The term used by experts for doing this is what is known as, the 'person centred' approach. It allows you to understand your loved one better and their references clearer so that you can provide them with the care that they need.

The act of talking to a person with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia about their life can actually make them happier. As they are drawing all their information from the past to try and cope with what is going on. By speaking to them about the past, they can share stories and create positive emotional experiences.

There are three techniques for gathering information: asking questions, observing surroundings and talking with family and friends. The sessions of sharing stories should be easy going and light. Perhaps try providing music, photos and any objects that can enhance the memory gathering. Give it a try with your loved one and see if it helps them.
