Alzheimer's care: Simple tips for daily tasks

Caring for someone with Alzheimer's is tough, each day can be very different from the last and so it is important to have a plan in place when the bad days come. Planning when caring for someone with Alzheimer's may sound  difficult to prepare for but it can help you greatly.

Below are some simple tips to help achieve daily tasks, these are from family members who are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's and also professionals carers.

Schedule wisely: to reduce stress, establish a routine to make each day less agitating and confusing for your loved one. It is often best to schedule tasks, like bathing and medical appointments, when the person is the most alert and refreshed.

Take you time: things are more than likely going to take longer than usual. You should allow the person suffering with Alzheimer's to take frequent breaks. Schedule more time for tasks so that there is no need to rush.

Provide choices: everyone needs to have choices, even if it is just a simple one. It allows someone to feel as though they are in control of their life. For example, give your loved one the choice between two outfits for the day or a hot or cold drink.

Involve the person: allow your loved one to do as much as possible. This can also help them feel in control and give them a sense of purpose. For example, if you lay out your loved ones clothes, they may be able to get themselves dressed.

Provide simple instructions: people with Alzheimer's best understand clear, one-step instructions. If you have a task that involves more than one step, break it down into smaller tasks.

Reduce distractions: turn off the TV and minimise other distractions at meal times and during conversations. This will make it a lot easier for the person with Alzheimer's to focus.
